‘This isn’t learning, it’s punishment,’ Mother Writes in Heartbreaking Letter

In a letter to Sen. Vickie Sawyer, a mother highlights the struggle of everyday families as they adapt to remote learning

Sen. Sawyer to Gov. Cooper: ‘Every day that passes is another day our state’s children fall behind’

Raleigh, N.C. — On Friday, Sen. Vickie Sawyer (R-Iredell) shared a letter from a parent in her district with Gov. Roy Cooper. The letter is a heartbreaking account of the struggles families across North Carolina are having with remote learning.

“I recognize that I am extremely fortunate to be in a position where I am able to work from home, and am used to working remotely. In preparation for virtual learning, I upgraded our internet to the top level of service available in our area, and created a dedicated space in our house. I established a routine for my children, so they know what to expect each day. Despite all of this, I have failed,” the mother wrote.

“I have failed as a parent. I have failed as an educator. I have failed as a proctor. I have failed as a PE teacher, art teacher, music teacher, librarian, lunch lady, janitor, and mom. … I need you to understand that my children are suffering. Our family is suffering…” the letter continued.

In sharing the letter with Gov. Cooper, Sen. Sawyer urged him to open schools up for full-time, in-person instruction.

“This mother’s story isn’t unique. Families across North Carolina are suffering and struggling to help educate their children during this period of online learning,” Sen. Sawyer said. “I urge Gov. Cooper with all of my heart to amend the school plan to provide parents, like this mother, with the option of full-time in-person instruction for her children.”
