Statement on Veto of Bill Banning “Sue-and-Settle” Schemes

--

Raleigh, N.C. — Sen. Paul Newton (R-Cabarrus) released the following statement on Gov. Cooper’s veto of Senate Bill 360, “Prohibit Collusive Settlements by the Attorney General”:

“Attorney General Josh Stein and Gov. Cooper’s handpicked elections director secretly negotiated with a Democratic law firm to change the rules of the 2020 election after voting began. A partner in that law firm was just indicted for illegal political meddling.

“This bill is necessary to keep corrosive, secretly negotiated rule changes out of future elections. Gov. Cooper just deepened distrust in the electoral process at a time when we should focus on improving it.”
