Cooper vetoed bills with Democratic support, including two that passed unanimously

Nearly every Democrat flipped their vote to fall in line with their party leader

Sen. Perry: “At the end of the day, Democrats have a constituency of one — Roy Cooper.”

Raleigh, N.C. — Today, Senate Republicans overrode four more of Gov. Roy Cooper’s vetoes of bipartisan legislation.

Senate Bills 299 and 331 passed the Senate unanimously. Senate Bill 329 passed with a 34–9 vote, with nine Democrats supporting the bill. Senate Bill 364 passed with a 30–15 vote, with three Democrats supporting the bill.

Nearly every Democrat flipped their vote to remain loyal to Gov. Cooper, instead of their constituents.

“Local governments that neglect to conduct annual audits should not be let off the hook and given a slap on the wrist. Residents need to know how their local officials are spending their hard-earned tax dollars. It’s a shame that Gov. Cooper vetoed a bill that supports good governance and provides transparency to our residents,” Sen. Lisa Barnes (R-Nash), the primary sponsor of Senate Bill 299, said.

Sen. Warren Daniel (R-Burke), the primary sponsor of Senate Bill 364 said, “Our state employees come from diverse backgrounds and we should be encouraging freedom of thought, instead of subjecting them to discriminatory trainings. This bill strikes the necessary balance between forbidding discrimination in our state workplaces and maintaining the First Amendment rights of our state employees.”

Sen. Jim Perry (R-Lenoir), the primary sponsor of Senate Bills 329 and 331, said, “After voting to support these bills, Democrats have decided that loyalty to their party leader is more important than good policy. At the end of the day, Democrats have a constituency of one — Roy Cooper.”

The vetoes now go to the House of Representatives for consideration. Gov. Cooper has vetoed six bills so far this year. The Senate has successfully overridden every one of them.
