REPORTERS BEWARE: Eric Holder’s Group Already Spreading Bad Info on Redistricting Process
In advance of public comment hearing, Holder’s NC director falsely accuses legislators of harboring a secret public speaker sign-up list stacked with Republican operatives
Flashback: Holder’s lawyers were publicly rebuked by Democratic legislators after making things up during 2019 redistricting process
Raleigh, N.C. — The North Carolina director for Eric Holder’s litigation outfit, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, invented a conspiracy theory this morning and publicly accused Republicans of harboring a secret sign-up list for today’s public comment hearing.
The Senate and House redistricting committees held a joint meeting this morning to hear public comment on their proposed nonpartisan redistricting criteria. About two dozen people signed up to speak, almost all of them Democratic activists. Every person who signed up had an opportunity to speak, and members of the public who didn’t sign up in advance were able to speak as well.
But Lekha Shupeck, Holder’s state director, took to Twitter to allege a nefarious plot (“dirty tricks,” as she put it) involving a secret sign-up list. She wrote, “The obvious implication is that Republican leadership of the committee had released [sign-up information] to selected people well before it came [sic] public, effectively filling up most if not all of the 60 speaking slots with their ideological compatriots.”
Of course, the conspiracy theory from Holder’s group has no basis in reality. Nearly every speaker at the hearing voiced opposition to Republicans, and the hearing ended early after everybody who wished to speak did so.
This is a pattern from Holder’s operation. During the 2019 redraw, Holder’s lawyers spread other baseless accusations, earning themselves a rebuke from the Democratic leader of the Senate.
Bottom line: Reporters should be wary of far-fetched accusations from Holder’s operation. They’ve spread bad information before, and they’re doing it again.
