Questions for Our State’s Next Governor

School choice, teacher pay, defunding police, and voter ID will be top policy debates next year

Tomorrow’s gubernatorial debate should cover them

Raleigh, N.C. — One of two people in tomorrow’s gubernatorial debate will become North Carolina’s next governor.

Policy areas like school choice, teacher pay, police budgets, and voter ID will be hotly debated issues next year. North Carolinians deserve to hear from the candidates on them, especially considering Gov. Roy Cooper hasn’t held an in-person press conference since March.

Here are some policy questions that should be covered:

• Will you sign a budget that defunds the police?
• Given the clear position of the World Health Organization and leading epidemiologists from Oxford, Stanford, and Yale that lockdowns should not continue, will you pledge to reopen the state and avoid lockdowns in the future?
• Do you agree with the overwhelming majority of North Carolinians, especially people of color, who support expanded school choice options?
• Will you pledge to faithfully implement the Constitutional requirement that voters present a photo identification at the polls?
• Will you agree to sign, not veto, teacher pay raises after multiple bills to raise teacher pay raise resulted in vetoes over the past two years?
• What is your position on arresting and prosecuting individuals who cause property damage?
• Will you order law enforcement to stand down when looting and property damage occurs during a protest march or event?
